Keep reading for more information on silos, including what silos are used for, how they’re manufactured, and how they’re installed.
What Is A Silo?
A silo is a large container used for the storage of bulk materials. They’re typically made of stainless steel sheets, but this can vary depending on what it’s going to be used for. The size of a silo can vary from 10m to 90m and can store materials weighing up to 80 tonnes.
Dry bulk materials are more commonly stored in silos - this can include anything from sawdust and coal to food products such as grain, salt, and flour.
These usually have to be kept in airtight silos, as this prevents any moisture from building up, and keeps the insects out which is necessary as insects can consume large weights of food products as well as contaminate the stock.
Safety First
Safety is key in all areas of construction, and silo installation is no exception. There’s a larger risk factor when handling large and heavy materials, so this should always be left to professionals with relevant experience.
Some safety precautions you should take include:
- Manufacturers should supply booklets with detailed installation information on the materials to be used
- The construction site should be adapted to the correct working conditions, and safety inspections should be carried out beforehand
- The materials to be used should be organised in order of installation and should be stored in a safe manner
- The field team should have constant access to the installation plans and details of the site
- Trained personnel should be on hand at all times during the installation process
- OHS equipment should be provided to all personnel working on the construction site

The latest product regulations will always be met, so you’ll know that all silos, pipework, ladders and gantries have full traceability and meet all structural requirements.
How are Silos Installed?
The installation of silos requires lots of materials, space, and manpower, and should always be completed with qualified professionals present. Keep reading for more information on how silos are installed.
Remove the Old Silo
Our team at Croston Engineering will coordinate all aspects of the silo installation, as well as removing the previous silo.
Our engineers can disconnect and dismantle your existing silo in preparation for the new installation, and organise all safety checks and removals. If requested, we can arrange for the previous silo parts to be transported for scrap - we are happy to work with you for your preferred method of removal.
Assembly
Assembling the silo is a difficult task that requires a lot of manpower, and must only be done by experienced personnel. If you’re not familiar with the silo process, then malfunctions, loss of products and loss of materials can be a common occurrence.
Whether you’re changing from using bulk bags to a silo system, you need a different system to meet increased demand, or you just need a silo replacement, we’re able to provide you with professional services.
Beforehand, we’ll do a site inspection and clarify your options to help you decide the way forward for your business. We’ll always ask your approval before getting started on a project, and keep you involved in the whole process.
Depending on your requirements, we can act as your primary contractor for your project, or we can take a step back and be a subcontractor as part of a larger project.
If you opt for us to be your primary contractor, then we’ll manage your whole project. We’ll work on detail design, site management, testing, training, and all other aspects that will help streamline the process.
Upon completion, our team will run extensive tests to ensure everything is up and running safely and correctly.
Once installed and in use, your silo should be cleaned and serviced at least once a year, and our team at Croston Engineering will be able to fulfil these needs for you safely and efficiently.
